GTA VI will have hurricanes and tropical storms, and a sky that genuinely changes
2026-09-29
Leonida will have tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes. Rockstar confirmed it in the Game Informer cover story published on 29 September 2026, in the section on the game's weather system.
It is the piece the setting was missing. A game set in Florida without a hurricane season would be like one set in London where it never rains: weather there is not scenery, it is part of how people live.
What has been confirmed
The concrete details so far:
- Tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes.
- Dynamic cloudscapes, with clouds forming and moving, from clear to overcast.
- Localised storms: you can stand in a dry area and watch a storm dumping rain in the distance.
- Puddles and wet surfaces that stay after rain, instead of drying the instant it stops.
- Rainbows when the light is right after a downpour.
The localised storms matter more than they sound. In most open world games weather is a global switch: either it rains everywhere or nowhere. A sky that can be split, sun where you stand and a wall of water several kilometres off, changes how the map reads from any high vantage point.
And puddles that persist are the kind of detail that makes a place look like it has been through something. The city after the storm is not the city before the storm.
What is not known
This is where it pays not to get ahead of ourselves. Rockstar has said hurricanes are in; it has not said how often they come, or whether they affect gameplay or the story.
Game Informer is just as clear in its article: it is not known how often these larger, more violent storms occur or how they affect gameplay and storytelling.
So anything you read about hurricane missions, flooded neighbourhoods or evacuations is, for now, invention. What is confirmed is that hurricanes exist in Leonida. The rest, when Rockstar tells us.
