How GTA VI's new wanted system works: six stars and a criminal profile
2026-09-03
The «Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look» trailer, published by Rockstar Games on August 27, 2026, shows the game's new wanted system in action. Two changes from Grand Theft Auto V. The first is the number of stars: it goes back to six, up from five in GTA V. The second runs deeper. Next to the meter sit red icons representing what the police currently know about you: whether they have identified your vehicle, your location, your clothing, your face, the weapon you are carrying, or whether security cameras caught you. Each icon can be switched off by removing that evidence: changing car, changing clothes, or destroying the camera that recorded you. The chase stops depending only on what you do and starts depending on what has been seen of you. Above that sits a criminal profile that does not reset when the chase ends. Rob Nelson, co-director of Rockstar North, put it this way in an interview with IGN: «consistent actions can have an impact on how the world reacts to you». In other words, your habitual way of operating is recorded and shapes how the game treats you later. What the trailer shows is official Rockstar Games material; Rob Nelson's remarks come from that interview, not from a press release. Rockstar has not published a detailed breakdown of the system, so exactly how that profile is calculated remains unknown.
